Basic Building skills
1 & 2

Come and join us for these  Basic Building Classes 1 & 2.
These are beginners level classes where you will learn the fundamentals of working with cement, concrete, bricks and blocks. Each course lasts 1 day and will cover a lot in a short period.  This should, however, give you the skills and confidence to undertake some simple building work on your own.

Course Content:

Basic Building 1
You will learn about small building foundations and slabs. We will be discussing and mixing concrete, setting out and laying a simple foundation. Then we will cover the different mixes of cement/ mortar, how to prepare them and problems to look out for.

Basic Building 2
We will be building a small wall. First with concrete blocks, then with bricks.
You will see how to level up and set a brick line, then how to lay cement, place the bricks/blocks and finally how to point.
We will discuss different types of tools and their uses.

N.B. This is a cement only based course -  it does not cover lime building or pointing. (There will be another course on this.)

Tools and materials will be supplied.

Basic 2 logically follows on from Basic 1 but each course will be design to stand alone, so participants can attend either or both.

This is a hands on workshop  - with a little theory.

It must be understood that building works and masonry is a vast subject but you should gain enough basic knowledge and confidence to build a small structure for yourself.

No prior knowledge necessary.
Unfortunately, this workshop is not suitable for children.

Trainer:
Grant Pirnie - Engineer and woodworker.

Grant has a background in engineering and runs his own woodwork business  - when he's not running training workshops.
